# INCRBY

> Increment integer by amount.

Use `INCRBY` to add an integer to the value stored at a key and get the result.

A missing key counts as `0`, the value must be the string form of a 64-bit signed integer, and an operation that would leave that range returns an error. A negative amount subtracts, which makes it interchangeable with [`DECRBY`](/docs/redis/commands/string/decrby).

Like [`INCR`](/docs/redis/commands/string/incr), the update is atomic, so it is safe for counters that several clients update at once, such as adding a batch size to a running total.

## Syntax

```redis theme={"system"}
INCRBY <key> <increment>
```

## Arguments

| Argument      | Required | Repeatable | Description                         |
| ------------- | -------- | ---------- | ----------------------------------- |
| `<key>`       | Yes      | No         | Redis key targeted by the command.  |
| `<increment>` | Yes      | No         | Integer amount to add to the value. |

## Response

The reply reports the result of the operation. Error replies have the same shape in RESP2 and RESP3 and are surfaced as exceptions by the SDKs below.

## Examples

TCP examples use the TLS `REDIS_URL` from the Upstash console. REST examples use `UPSTASH_REDIS_REST_URL` and `UPSTASH_REDIS_REST_TOKEN`.
