# GETSET

> Set value and return old value.

<Warning>
  Prefer [`SET`](/docs/redis/commands/string/set) with the `GET` argument in new code: `SET <key> <value> GET`.
</Warning>

Use `GETSET` to set a new value and get the previous one in a single atomic step.

The reply is the old value, or null when the key did not exist. Note that the key's time to live is discarded, so a key with an expiration becomes permanent when written this way.

The classic use is resetting a counter while reading it, where the atomicity guarantees nothing is counted twice. [`SET`](/docs/redis/commands/string/set) with the `GET` option does the same thing and can additionally set or keep an expiration in the same call.

## Syntax

```redis theme={"system"}
GETSET <key> <value>
```

## Arguments

| Argument  | Required | Repeatable | Description                                        |
| --------- | -------- | ---------- | -------------------------------------------------- |
| `<key>`   | Yes      | No         | Redis key targeted by the command.                 |
| `<value>` | Yes | No | String value to store in place of the current one. |

## Response

The reply reports the result of the operation. Error replies have the same shape in RESP2 and RESP3 and are surfaced as exceptions by the SDKs below.

| Protocol | Reply                                         |
| -------- | --------------------------------------------- |
| RESP2 | Bulk string or Null bulk string or null array |
| RESP3    | Bulk string or Null                           |

<Note>
  Client libraries often decode bulk strings, maps, sets, and numeric strings into language-native values. The table describes the Redis wire reply.
</Note>

## Examples

TCP examples use the TLS `REDIS_URL` from the Upstash console. REST examples use `UPSTASH_REDIS_REST_URL` and `UPSTASH_REDIS_REST_TOKEN`.
